Clean sweep

A 10-member team from the Janitorial Services Group of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently received a Hammer Award for maintaining the ultraclean integrity of the cleanrooms in the institute's Measurement and Standards Laboratories. Promoted by Vice President Albert Gore, the award recognizes excellence in customer service by government workers. The team members completed training and certification courses in cleanroom management and now perform janitorial services for a growing number of NIST cleanrooms. The team enables NIST to save more than $100,000 annually by not having to pay outside contractors to do the work. The group was presented the award in the Old Executive Office Building in Washington, DC. Holding the award is team member Maria Alvarez. Pictured from left to right are Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Robert Mallett, Ernest Matthews, Joszef Kocsis, Richard Delisi, NIST Director Ray Kammer, Michael George, Joseph Herron, Alvarez, group leader Tyrone Gibson, and Morley Winograd, who is a senior policy advisor to Vice President Gore. Not pictured are team members Marie Liason, Preston Mason, and Jerome Orye.
