Dave named exec vp and COO at Siemens Microelectronics; Stoessl becomes president of Rosemount Uniloc unit; Jenoptik's Honold honored

Mark McDermott was chosen by Intel to head the chipmaker's new Texas Development Center in Austin. His duties will include overseeing development of Intel's Architecture microprocessors. McDermott is the former director of Motorola's Somerset Design Center in the Network and Computer Systems Group..... Siemens Microelectronics has appointed Bharat Dave executive vp and COO. Dave left IBM to join Siemens Business Communications in 1986.... Mitch Tyson has been promoted to CEO of PRI Automation. Tyson joined the Massachusetts-based supplier in 1987 as vp, operations. He has been COO since 1990 and president since 1995.

Therma-Wave has made three personnel changes at the executive level. The metrology equipment supplier has named Martin Schwartz the new president and COO and has selected L. Ray Christie as new CFO. Allan Rosencwaig, a cofounder of the company, will keep the title of CEO. He is former president and CEO. . . . David Buchanan has stepped down as president and CEO of Three-Five Systems, a manufacturer of LCDs and LEDs. Buchanan is one of the original investors in the company, and he oversaw the development of Three-Five's headquarters in Tempe, AZ. Buchanan will continue to serve as chairman of the board of directors. . . . Joy Weiss has left Nortel's Telco division to join Siliscape as president and CEO. Based in Sunnyvale, CA, Silicscape manufactures microdisplays.

Mike Stoessl has been named president of Rosemount Analytical's Uniloc division. He is the former president of Hurst Manufacturing. Uniloc makes on-line measurement instruments. . . . Transition Technology International has named Robert Swor executive vp of the silicon wafer distributor. He will oversee operations of Silicon 2000, the company's manufacturing division, which is based in Vancouver, WA. Swor most recently served as senior vp of operations at Mitsubishi Silicon America. . . . Betty Sattler, president of Sattler Enterprises, has formed a consulting firm specializing in electronic gases for silicon and compound semiconductor applications. The company is based in Burke, VA. Sattler's background includes expertise in isotopically enriched products, UV photoresist, and next-generation silicon.

Kenneth Thompson has been appointed to the board of directors of Lam Research. Before joining the board Thompson worked at Intel for 25 years in management positions, most recently as vp of technology manufacturing engineering. . . . Bruce Gehman has been elected chairman of ASTM's Committee F-1 on Electronics. The 198-member committee develops standards relating to electronic devices and the materials, processes, process controls, and equipment used in manufacturing them. Gehman joined ASTM in 1973 and has served as chairman of committees on wire bonding and sputtered thin films. He is vp of R&D at Leybold Materials.

Alfred Honold, director of advanced technologies at Jenoptik Infab and chairman of the SEMI standards program in Europe, has received the Karel Urbanek Memorial Award. The award recognizes Honold's contributions to the SEMI International Standards Program. . . . The SEMI's North American Human/Computer Interface Task Force elected Frank Summers as cochairman. Summers is president and CTO of Industrial Strength Graphics in Peterborough, NH. The task force is charged with establishing user interface standards and design guidelines for the automation of semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Robert Mionis has been hired as global operations director for the implant systems division of Eaton's semiconductor equipment unit. He joins the company from AlliedSignal, where he spent four years as director of operations. . . . MKS Instruments has established three new senior management positions. The manufacturer of gas management instruments promoted Howard Mastropiero and Luke Hinkle to directors of materials delivery products and process pressure products, respectively. In addition, Al Sampson has joined MKS as director of the process analysis products group. . . . Robert Swann has been appointed vp, finance and total quality management, at Solvay Interox. Paul Koenig has been promoted to director of logistics.

Tegal has promoted Philip Wilton to European gm. He is the former director of service operations. . . . The new manager of Olin Microelectronic Materials' process chemicals plant in Mesa, AZ, is Charles Newton IV. Lindsey Hall was appointed director of technology for chemicals and services. . . . MicroDisplay has appointed Satinder Singh vp of engineering. . . . Joining XMR as chief scientist is John Miller. XMR manufactures excimer lasers and beam delivery systems. . . . Cognex has promoted Marilyn Matz to senior vp of software engineering for the company's modular vision systems division.

The new senior vp of worldwide sales and service of worldwide sales at Asyst is Dennis Riccio. . . . Varian appointed William Pletsch U.S. national sales manager for its semiconductor equipment business. He comes to Varian from Eaton. . . . Marc Mason has joined Thornton Associates as national sales manager. . . . The new national sales manager of Materials Research Corp. is John Czysz. . . . Hodess Building Co. has appointed Patrick Beatrice business development manager.
