Gualandris leads Semitool; Epsztein leaves Schlumberger to head Vanguard Automation; Novellus taps Spivey; Sun shines at SensArray; Lam promotes Newberry
Semitool has named Fabio Gualandris president and CEO. He succeeds Raymon Thompson, the company's founder, who will continue as chairman. Before joining Semitool, Gualandris was the director of the automotive business unit of the dedicated products group at STMicroelectronics (formerly SGS-Thomson). . . . Imtec Acculine has promoted Timothy Welch to president and COO. He is the company's former vp of operations. . . . Michel Epsztein has been appointed president of Vanguard Automation. He previously was vp and gm, test systems, of Schlumberger's ATE division
Sematech has named Paul Winebarger director of interconnect. He replaces Jon Dahm, who returns to Motorola. Winebarger, who has worked at Motorola for more than 14 years, will remain a Motorola employee during his Sematech assignment. . . . ISA is seeking a replacement for Glenn Harvey, who plans to resign as executive director of the organization, effective March 31, 1999. . . . Christopher Augur is no longer president of SpeedFam Corp., the U.S. subsidiary of SpeedFam International. Until a new president is appointed, Makoto Kouzuma, president and CEO of SpeedFam International, will assume responsibilities of the position vacated by Augur.
Industry veteran Ken Thompson has been appointed to the board of directors of several companies after retiring from his position as vp of technology, manufacturing engineering at Intel. He has joined the boards of GaSonics International, PRI Automation, and Silicon Valley Group.
. . . Novellus has elected William Spivey to its board of directors. Spivey is group president of Lucent Technologies' network products group. . . . Ronald Shelly joins Fairchild Semiconductor's board of directors. He is president of Solectron Texas.
Lam Research has promoted Stephen Newberry to president and COO. In August 1997, Newberry joined the company as executive vp and COO. . . . Lam subsidiary OnTrak Systems has appointed Jim Kuhl vp of operations. . . . Daniel Berry has been promoted to executive vp and COO at Ultratech Stepper. . . . David Buchanon has resigned from his position as president and CEO of Three-Five Systems. He will continue to serve as chairman of the company's board. . . . Elli Yaniv has been appointed COO at Orbit Semiconductor.
Mei Sun has left Luxtron to join SensArray as vp of sensor R&D. In the newly created position, Sun will develop sensor technologies and expand the company's direct in situ wafer temperature measurement product lines. . . . Ionics has made several appointments. Edward Cichon has been named vp of the company's equipment business group, while Christian Cuillery has been appointed vp in charge of European business activities. Also joining the company are Arthur Sebastiano as CIO and P. Robert Reed as COO of Ionics Sievers in the instruments business group.
Kenton Toomey has been appointed executive vp of operations at Osmonics. In addition, the company has promoted Wil Pergande, Rick Lesan, and A. P. Roy Choudhury to vp special projects. . . . John Smith joins Photronics from Mitel Corp. (formerly GEC Plessey Semiconductor). Smith replaces John Hambidge as vp of European operations. Hambidge was promoted to executive vp of worldwide operations. Photronics also has appointed John Burnette senior vp of worldwide sales and marketing. He is the former vp of sales and operations for the passive components division at Philips Electronics.
Ajit Rode has been named senior vp and gm of Semiconductor Systems, a subsidiary of FSI International. Rode's background includes work at Spectrian, Novellus, and Tektronix. . . . ASM Lithography has appointed Dave Chavoustie vp of worldwide sales. He replaces Doug Marsh, who will head a new ASML operation. . . . John Newman joins Semiconductor Equipment Technology as vp of sales and marketing. He is a former vp of North American sales and field operations at Lam Research.
. . . Kyocera America has appointed Doug Allday vp of manufacturing operations in Mexico.
Watkins-Johnson has made two promotions in its semiconductor equipment group (SEG). Stephen Lanza was named vp of global business operations, while John Villadsen has been appointed vp of customer service and manufacturing. . . . Hossein Moghadam joins TeraStor as senior vp of advanced development. . . . CVC has appointed Brian Renner vp of sales, semiconductor products. . . . CleanPak Systems has named Charles Rowland vp of business development, sales, and marketing.
Charles Cook has been named vp and gm of the electronic chemicals division at Ashland Chemical. He joins the company from MEMC. . . . William Luzier has been named director, technical/commercial for the semiconductor division of Greene, Tweed & Co.
