INDUSTRY NEWS

Freshly planted

White Oak Semiconductor, a $1.5-billion venture between Motorola and Siemens, took root during opening ceremonies on April 28 in suburban Richmond, VA. At the podium, master of ceremonies John Godec of Motorola introduces Motorola's president Wayne Nesbit, at far left, and Siemens' executive vice president Thomas Seifert. White Oak's 800,000-sq-ft plant (inset) has begun producing 64-Mb DRAMs on 8-in. wafers. Siemens will market the devices. Later this year, the fab will begin making FSRAMs, which will be sold by Motorola. The fab took 11 months to build. The venture takes its name from the site, a state-owned industrial park named for the thousands of oak trees in the region.
