Applied's Sinha, MiCRUS's Grubel join Asyst's board; AlliedSignal appoints Wild president of electronics materials unit; Hull assumes presidency of MRS

Naoko Tani was promoted to vp of standards for SEMI Japan. She worked previously as the marketing manager for the trade association's Japanese operations. . . . Kinetico's engineered systems division has named Thomas Dome director of operations. The business unit manufactures equipment for deionization, ion exchange, and electrowinning. . . . Ashok Sinha of Applied Materials and Stanley Grubel of MiCRUS have joined the board of directors of Asyst Technologies. Sinha is president of Applied's CVD product business group; Grubel is CEO of MiCRUS. One of the spots became vacant when William Reed,who had retired as president of SEMI in December 1996, left the board. Reed died of a heart attack on March 5.

Cymer,a manufacturer of illumination sources for deep-UV lithography, has made three management appointments. The San Diego-based vendor named Robert MacKnight vp/gm of aftermarket operations, Robert Ozarski vp of engineering, and Kenneth Rebitz director of marketing. . . . AlliedSignal has appointed Geoff Wild president of its electronic materials business. He is the former president and division director of Johnson Matthey electronic materials. . . . Michael Cheshire was chosen president, COO, and a director of Gerber Scientific. Cheshire will oversee operations of the company's wholly owned subsidiaries, including Gerber Garment Technology and Gerber Optical. . . . Paul Palmberg retired as president and CEO of Physical Electronics. He spent more than 27 years with the company, which makes surface analysis instruments. Succeeding him in the post is David Chalmers, former president and CEO of TA Instruments.

The new president of the Materials Research Society is Robert Hull, an associate professor in the materials science and engineering department at the University of Virginia. Hull automatically assumed the post after serving as first vp of the society in 1996. Robert Nemanich, a professor of physics at North Carolina State University, was elected first vp and president-elect. Alan Hurd of Sandia National Laboratories was elected for a two-year term as treasurer. . . . Canon USA has appointed Noriharu Hirai director and gm of its semiconductor equipment division. He previously served as gm of worldwide exports for Canon Semiconductor Equipment. . . . The new engineering manager at Lumonics/Oxnard is Charles William Souder, the former vp of engineering for View Engineering and Photonic Automation. Jerry Becker was appointed product line manager for the company's WaferMark laser marking systems.

Frank Sinclair is the new director of engineering for Eaton's implant systems division in Beverly, MA. Sinclair is the former manager of R&D for Eaton's semiconductor equipment operations. . . . Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Golden, CO, appointed Lisa Emerson to the post of material scientist. She comes to the analytical lab from Telectronics Pacing Systems. . . . Richard Gould has been named technical specialist at Polymer Design. The Rockland, MA-based company manufactures plastic parts for semiconductor, electronics, and other industrial applications. . . . Joining Aeronex as R&D manager for the vendor's GateKeeper purifier line is Dan Alvarez.

CVC appointed Michael Meyers information management and technology director. Based in Rochester, NY, CVC manufactures equipment for thin-film processes. . . . The new vp of marketing at Therma-Wave is David Willenborg, a company cofounder. He was promoted from vp of technology. Donald Strand was hired as vp of customer support for the maker of metrology and inspection systems. . . .Charles Noé has joined Rudolph Technologies as director of sales, western region. . . .SemiTest named William Finch vp of sales for the maker of defect detection tools.

Raymond Benson has been appointed vp of worldwide sales for MRS Technology, which also promoted Elvino da Silveira to director of customer support and James Quinn to manager of sales. . . . Silicon Valley Group named Soon-Eung Kim to the newly created position of human resources manager for the vendor's Asian operations. Promoted to vp of Asia/Pacific sales was Mahesh Shah. Jim Dodsworth has been appointed vp of account management, also a new position at SVG. He will oversee sales, service, and support for one of the vendor's major clients.

BOC Gaseshas named Piotr Sadkowski director of global customer service for electronics products. . . . Louis Di Nardo is the new vp of marketing for Linear Technology, a manufacturer of analog ICs based in Milpitas, CA. . . . Surface metrology tool vendor Wyko has promoted Matthew Abbene to manager of North American sales. The Tucson, AZ-based company also promoted Tami Balter European sales manager.
