SID adds two chapters
The Society for Information Display (SID) has formed two new chapters,
one in India and the other in Singapore/ Malaysia. The interim director
of the India chapter is K. R. Sarma. B. A. Ghani is the interim director
of the Singapore/Malaysia chapter. The additional chapters bring the total
number of SID affiliates to 26. Based in San Jose, the nonprofit organization
has expanded in recent years by adding chapters in Europe as well as in
the U.S. Southwest and Pacific Northwest.
In related news, SID has launched a redesigned Web site at http://www.
sid.org. The site focuses on industry news with short articles and newproduct
columns edited by the staff of SID's Information Display magazine.
An industry directory, organized by both company and products, is also
featured. An international calendar of display-related conferences will
be updated weekly. The site also contains a directory of the organization's
6400 members.
'Vanishing' LCD disappears?
A new display technology can make LCDs more readable than current
small-screen displays, its developers say. Delta Optoelectronics and Dow
Chemical claim that their new polymeric light-emitting diode (pLED) screens
can be read more easily than LEDs that must be viewed either straight
on or when backlit. The high brightness of the pLEDs "gives them excellent
visibility from a wide viewing angle," says Chun-hui Tsai, general manager
of Delta Optoelectronics in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Delta's displays use Dow
Chemical's green polyfluorene copolymer. The material is capable of producing
light as bright as a television screen using only a small power source,
Dow says. The displays are well suited for use in cellular phones and
other wireless devices because of their high-contrast images and thinness,
according to Dow. Information: 800/ 441-4369.
