Team readies LED advance

A newly formed multidisciplinary team will try to develop passive-driven polymer organic LEDs for advanced consumer and automotive use. The group is led by Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Philips Research Laboratories. The other members are Philips Components, Grundig, TRW Automotive, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Linköping.

The two-year project has received a multimillion dollar ECU award from the European Union under the EU Highlight program. The new LEDs will be based on polymers that emit light in an electrical field and will be brighter, less costly, and lighter than today's flat-panel displays. The diodes will also consume less power and, in the future, will be fabricated on flexible substrates. These capabilities make them well suited for use in consumer electronic devices and automotive instrumentation, the partners explain. Philips says the U.S. market for the devices is forecast to grow to more than $700 million over the next five years.
