Fab Forecast:

DRAM production, 300-mm fab growth
to spur tool sales

Millions of dollars
Spending on DRAM production will fuel explosive growth of wafer fab equipment sales in 2001, according to a Gartner/Dataquest forecast presented at Semicon West 2000. But the market research firm warns of a DRAM downturn in 2002 caused in part by a reduction in demand for system-level integration and by increased competition.

By 2005 more than half of all fab equipment shipped will be 300-mm gear, a Gartner/Dataquest forecast says. As 300-mm fabs ramp up, sales of related front-end tools will reach $6.5 billion in 2001 and increase to between $10 billion and $11 billion in 2002. A predicted industry downturn in 2002 may slow 300-mm penetration. Processing on 200-mm wafers is the "safe haven" in 20002001 for fast capacity increases, according to the market research firm. In 2000 total fab equipment shipments will grow 68.6% worldwide from approximately $18 billion in 1999 to $30.2 billion.
